Go Girl
This magazine is a teenage girl's magazine, the one that I had bought was named "go girl totally Taylor". The magazine is voted the UK's best girl's magazine. This magazine includes gifts, gossip, one direction, quizzes and make 'n' create, when researching about the magazine and looking at the magazines content it show's the audience that read this magazine are interested in celebrity's, gossip getting free gifts and quizzes. When looking on the Go girl magazine website I found evidence that the magazine makes sure they find out the interests of their audience, as their was a small survey on their.They also know the personality of their target audience, because this magazine would not appeal to boy's because of the content it includes and the colours. The magazine came in plastic packaging and was £3.99 but included free girls, this show's that it is quite expensive but includes free gifts so is probably worth it, because it is a teenage girls magazine the parent might buy it, the packaging shows the free gifts are protected from becoming damaged. The marketing for the magazine has been well thought of to make sure the magazine stand's out with girly colours's are free gifts that appeal to the right target audience which is about 12-16. Teenage girls from all over could buy this magazine because it is very appealing to this audience I will explain more about the content of the magazine below;
This link above is the official in the garden website, I have chosen to write about this magazine because it is very different in the way it is put across to it's target audience. Being a child's magazine the mother or father would have to buy them it, but it is a very popular child's TV show as well as magazine. The magazine included free toys for children which appeals to the mother to buy the toy's because children enjoy playing with them. The creator of the magazine has shown that the target audience is for intended for the very young which is 1-4 years old. This is shown by the characters on the front page of the magazine and by watching the TV programme. Parent's will go through the magazine with their child so it need's to appeal to parents as well because their the one's chosen what their child will read or watch. Based on a small price of £2.50 I think this magazine is for anyone either rich or poor to buy so their child can enjoy it. The magazine is based on what young children like and what they are interested in. This magazine is geared to both girl's are boy's because it includes both gender character's and uses natural colour's that aren't just geared to either boy's or girl's.The way in which they are able to sell this magazine is because of having free children's toys included and having activities for children to do, and having familiar characters from a TV programme in the magazine.
This magazine is mainly for educational purpose and to teach children different thing's by including a graze voucher it has soon that they promote healthy eating. The way in which they are trying to sell the magazine is by showing adult's that this magazine is good for children to read and they will benefit from it. Parent's can send reviews in to change anything about the way of the magazine and add anything they would like to be included in the magazine.
Compared to each other
Both magazines are very different in the way they try and sell the magazine and get the target audience across. I chose to compare a teenage girls magazine to a child's magazine to show the different way's of how the magazines are constructed and how they are sell-able to the correct target audience. I will bullet point and explain now how they are so different;
- Packaging: The magazine is inside plastic packaging to keep the gifts inside. On the packaging in bold yellow and pink writing it says "7 FREE GIFTS", this is to stand out to the buyer's because everyone loves free gifts, it makes the target audience want to get the magazine for the free gift's. The gift's are related to the target audience's interests, 1D poster, most teenage girls love direction, secret notepad, 4 cute erasers, doodle pen and a lolly,the font and images used to show the free gift's relate to the 'girly' theme because it is all pink, and pretty pictures. The magazine uses the sentence "packed with stuff you love" which appeals to the audience because it show's the magazine takes interest in what teenage girls are into at the minute. The font is big bold and colourful to attract the teenage girls eyes. There is also in bold about a competition which will reel in the audience because of the fact there is an Ipad Mini to win.
- When opening the packaging the front cover of the magazine says the title 'GoGirl in purple and pink which are well known colours for girls to like. Taylor Swift is the main image on the front cover so clearly teenage girl's see her as a role model. There is many female celebritys on the front cover that teenage girls see as idols such as Katy Perry, Ariande Grande, Cheryl Cole and Rita Ora. There are no males on the front cover which show's it is a girls only targeted magazine and also it mentions that the target audience will love everything in the magazine including, lego friends, frozen, into the woods, pets and angry birds.
- The first page has a poster of Elsa from Frozen, which is a Disney film that has attracted many young girls over the past months. They have researched into what girls are interested in at the moment because of this poster.
- The second page talks about the Dumping Ground VS Eve, these TV programs are popular to a girl audience.
- On another page item's from claires are mentioned so they actually advertise a shop that teenage girls are popular with, this would appeal to the audience because of trend setting once a group of girl's start wearing something the trend starts and goes on.
- Another advertisement is Tamagotchi friends, which mentions were you can buy this toy from and clearly states that they are bought to play with friend's.
- Within the magazine was a leaflet for adopting a big cat and explaining how the numbers of them are going down, this show's the magazine is caring and that they believe the target audience will care enough to adopt one of the big cats.
- In the magazine they have a page were you can design a jumper, and decide what type of person you are including, a sweetheart, sporty or statement, it also advertises jumpers from New Look, M n S and Kylie M&Co.
- Taylor Swift is the main girl idol in this magazine, the way they are trying to talk to the target audience in this magazine is the way you would explain thing's to a teenage girl, it's very casual talk and includes lots of girly language to make sure the target audience is not getting distracted and want's to keep reading the magazine.
- There are many posters in the magazine of female idols and also quiz's about general teenage films that girls are enjoying lately such as Into the Woods,
- Competitions are used within the magazine to appeal to the audience by helping them to get involved and the experience the chance to win an Ipad Mini if drawing and sending in Minion.
- There is a page that is all about cute animals's which appeals to teenage girls because of the images having cute sayings coming out of their mouths.
- The last of the magazine includes lots of quiz's and word searches that are related to the target audiences interests such as dog's, cat's, films, music stars.
This magazine is sold to the teenage girl target audience because of the way it is constructed, the points I made above show that the magazine is geared towards girl's, because of their interests and what they are looking for in the magazine, free gifts and posters of big celebrity's. The colours also have a massive impact on the magazine because pink and purple are geared to girl's they look for the way the magazine is presented and in this case only teenage girls would go for this type of magazine. They get feedback from the magazine on the Go Girl website and also when giving an address to send competitions in and quiz's. People review the magazine and say why they think it is good and bad.
In The Garden
http://www.inthenightgarden.co.uk/
- On the front page the writing isn't 'in your face' persuading you to buy it, it just clearly states what you will get in the magazine. Being a parent they would be looking at the front cover and the child would most likely only care about the toy's included inside, so the magazine need's to appeal to adults not just children that's why they don't go over the top with bold, bright coloured writing. The title is just blue lower case letters saying 'In the Night Garden' official magazine. The background colour is dark blue maybe for boy's and then includes white flowers for maybe the girl's side of the magazine. Also on the front cover are characters from the show in the night garden and it mentions activities that children can do inside.
- One the first two pages it actually has an explanation to parents saying that the magazine has activities that will help small children with their development and is based on these areas of the Early Years Curriculum. So it makes sure parents know that this magazine will help teach children so this is very appealing for them to buy the magazine as parents want to help children learn. It also lists what is included in the magazine, which is creating, numbers, colours, shapes, word's and stories, moving and feeling happy, their are also contact details and emails if adults want to suggest any idea's to put into the magazine.
- At the bottom of the page their is a email address www.immediateinsiders.com/register to give any feedback on the magazine, this shows the magazine company care about what it is people are wanting children to get out of this magazine.
- The colours on the magazine are very pale mainly because they don't want it to seem as if it is geared to mostly girls instead of boys or the other way round as it is geared towards both genders. The font is very bold on these pages to stand out to children. One word on the page says 'WAVE' so they can hopefully get an understanding of the word and do the action. It also involves the children by saying they need to draw around their hand and colour it in, this activity will be fun because around that age, kid's tend to like drawing and getting messy.
- There are small icons on the page that tell the child to do different thing's one says blow a kiss to the garden friend's and another is where they have to find the image of the telephone on the page this will engage their learning.
- The toys provided in the magazine are used within one of the stories on the pages, it say's to bounce the toy whenever they see the word BOUNCE, bounce is in capitals and bold to stand out so the child does it.
- The paper for this magazine is softer than normal paper most likely so the child does not get paper cuts so they have thought about health and safety of the magazine.
- There are lots of colouring in activities that show the interest of the target audience.
- In the magazine there is a page where you fill your details in and send a picture in of yourself and name.
- Also there is an advertisement for CBeebies magazine and to download the app this show's the creator wants you to buy other magazines and get involved by using the app.
- Free stickers were put into the magazine to stick onto the pages, at the age 1-4 they enjoy stickers because it could be rewarded for doing well from learning from the magazine or just in a fun way.
- Spot the difference is used in the magazine because it help's children to become alert and to warm their brain up to do other activities.
- Their are story pages for the parent's to read to the children, with detailed illustrations to show the children while the story will be read to them.
- Also a free kid's graze box voucher is included in the magazine to promote healthy eating for children.
Compared to each other
Both magazines are very different in the way they try and sell the magazine and get the target audience across. I chose to compare a teenage girls magazine to a child's magazine to show the different way's of how the magazines are constructed and how they are sell-able to the correct target audience. I will bullet point and explain now how they are so different;
- The target audience for Go Girl is very different compared to In The Night Garden as the Go Girl magazine is for 12-16 year old teenage girls and in the night garden is for 1-4 year old mixed gender. These audiences compared both have different need's teenage girl's are interested in in celebrity role models, quizzes, word searches and hair and beauty also about fashion whereas 1-4 year old's are interested in colouring in, character's, toy's and being read story's to.
- The price of the magazines are not much different but there is more value for both target audience's because a 12-16 year old wouldn't be wanting a magazine with colouring in and 1-4 year old wouldn't get much use out of a magazine about role models and clothes.
- The free gifts in each magazine appealed to the target audience's such as Go Girl had free posters, rubbers, notebook, doodle pen and also a lolly which is what teenage girl's are in to but the in the night garden magazine is different because they had free toy's which benefit the child because they can play with the toy's while interacting with the magazine, maybe this could be done with the Go Girl magazine but the free gift's in that were not to be used in the magazine.
- The colour's on each magazines were very different in the night garden only had natural colour's that appealed to children both girl and boy, the Go Girl magazine was all geared to girl's because of the pink's and purple's being used all the time, even in the writing.
- In the Go Girl magazine it included a lot of role model's that were female celebrity's and a lot of nice clothing for girl's because of what they clearly are interested in and what appeals to them, whereas in the night garden is more appealing to the children by parent's letting them colour in and learn about shape's, it has a more education purpose than the Go Girl magazine.
- The front cover's of each magazine are very different, In the night garden is very plain and simple and has natural colour's on it so it does not look to confusing for children and it has the characters on the front that are recognisable from the TV programme so it appeals to the children, and it also uses plain writing that is not bold and full of bright colours, whereas the Go Girl magazine is packed with everything on the front page, and has very bold bright writing to stand out and used purple and pink colours to suit a female audience. It also has different bubbles with explanations of what is included inside the magazine, it looks very fun and full of what interests teenage girls.
- They both receive different form's of feedback also, Go Girl has a website and also has a address were you can send competitions into so this make's it easy for teenagers to contact them. In the night garden has a email address were parent's can comment about the magazine and ask if they can add certain learning for children into the magazine. They also have a address were you can send pictures and your name in.
- They both use advertising but in different ways in the night garden advertised a free kids graze box which is to show they want kid's to maintain a healthy lifestyle, they also advertised Cbeebies magazine and the app which is similar to in the night garden so it is related advertising for the 1-4 year old target audience. Go Girl advertised teenage toy's, and clothes for teenagers which is for their target audience. So depending on the target audience depends on what the magazines will advertise.
- The paper for each magazine's are different in the night garden is not shiny paper it is dull and soft maybe so it can't cut kid's but the Go Girl magazine is shiny paper.
- The content of both magazines are not the same they only are geared to their target audience's, they won't put content in a magazine with a target audience of teenage girls in a children's magazine.
